The general context of this paper is the locality problem in quantum theory. In a recent issue of this journal, Redei (1991) offered a proof of the proposition that algebraic Lorentz-covariant quantum field theory is past stochastic Einstein local. We show that Redei's proof is either spurious or circular, and that it contains two deductive fallacies. Furthermore, we prove that the mentioned theory meets the stronger condition of stochastic Haag locality.

The density matrix ρ describing a decaying system can be expressed in terms of correlations among observables belonging to the subsystems. Due to this structure and to the difficulties in measuring higher rank tensors of decay products for a single decay event, it is found that the mean value of ρ cannot be determined, in general, from measurements on the decay products. We also discuss the consequences of this conclusion as far as tests of quantum mechanics are concerned.

This article provides an introduction to the articles in this theme issue. This collection examines epistemological, ontological, moral and political questions in medicine in light of the philosophical ideas of Charles Taylor. A synthesis of Taylor's relevant work is presented. Taylor has argued for a conception of the human sciences that regards human life as meaningful–deriving meaning from surrounding horizons of significance. An overview of the interdisciplinary articles in this issue is presented. This collection advances our thinking in the philosophy (...) of medicine as well as the philosophy of Charles Taylor. Im Gegensatz zu L. v.Bertalanffy, der eine einheitliche biol. Theorie für nicht möglich hält, vertrete ich die These: Eine umfassende biologische Theorie, ausgehend von den Grundlagen der Physik, ist bis dato nicht ausschließbar.Betrachtet man die Frage ‘In welchem Sinne ist eine umfassende physikalische Theorie heute möglich?’, so ergibt sich, daß die Konzipierung je umfassenderer Theorien mit einer Beschränkung des vorhandenen empirischen Satzbestandes einerseits, mit einer Hinzunahme von Regeln für neue empirische Befunde andererseits verbunden ist. Wie am Beispiel einer Schar verschiedenartiger (...) statistischer Mechaniken gezeigt wird, oder wie der an einem experimentell nicht überprüfbaren Wert postulierte Übergang derGalilei- in dieLorentz-Transformation deutlich macht, stellen aufeinanderfolgende, abgeschlossene physikalische Theorien keineswegs Grenzfälle der vorausgehenden Theorien dar.Das unzureichende quantentheoretische Aufbauprinzip der Produkträume zur Konstituierung biol. Systeme weist ebenso wie die Nichtnachprüfbarkeit der Quantentheorie für makrophysikalische Körper auf einen umfassenderen Ansatz hin. Ohne das Hypothetische der einheitlichen Feldtheorie der Elementarteilchen imHeisenbergschen Entwurf zu berühren, erlaubt die nicht lineare Spinortheorie neben der Klassifizierung auch eine Voraussagemöglichkeit, obschon durch diese universelle Grundgleichung die Gesetze in den übrigen Teilen der Physik nicht vollständig bestimmt sind. Gleichwohl bietet dieser Ansatz keinen Schlüssel zur Lösung von Problemen im Grenzbereich zwischen Physik und Biologie.Mehr als das weite Feld biol. Theorien scheinen peinliche Vorurteile biol. Phänomenen gegenüber einer einheitlichen Theorie entgegenzustehen, Vorurteile, ob es sich um die willkürliche Abgrenzung zwischen Mikro- und Makrophänomenen handelt, ob die ungerechtfertigte Gegenüberstellung von qualitativen u. quantitativen Phänomenen im Vordergrund steht, ob ein über das kausale Argumentationsschema hinausgehendes Erklärungsschema gefordert wird, oder ob schließlich die anthropozentrischen Begriffsbildungen sowie die emotional bedingten Wesensfragen Platz greifen.Dessen ungeachtet stellen die Lebenserscheinungen ebenso wie die Verhaltenskombinate Mechanismen dar und sind durch Gesetze beschreibbar. Daher kann eine universelle Grundgleichung unter Hinzunahme weiterer, d.h. über den Bereich des Physikalischen hinausgehenden, empirischer Regeln nicht ausgeschlossen werden. In diesem Sinne ist eine umfassende biol. Theorie, ausgehend von den Grundlagen der Physik, möglich, ohne daß diese These eine Reduktion der Biologie auf die Physik zur Folge hätte. (shrink)

In order to cure the social sciences of many of their inveterate diseases, it seems to me extremely important and useful to support and develop in some measure A.S. Tsipko's ideas on the doctrinal preconditions of our difficulties and failures in the building of socialism, ideas that have provoked such wide-ranging responses.

In the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle appears to use an elegant short argument to attack Plato's doctrine of the good, which argument equally appears to attack Aristotle's own doctrine of the good. I consider these two questions: First: Why does Aristotle reverse the judgment of Socrates/Plato on the issue: Which is better - things that are good in themselves, or things that are both good in themselves and good for their consequences? Second: Why does Aristotle attack Plato's doctrine that the Form (...) of the Good is the chief good, with an argument that appears to threaten his own view that eudaimonia is the chief good? I think the answers to these two questions are related. The elegant short argument in question I call "Aristotle's Fast Argument." After apologizing for criticizing views held by friends of his, Aristotle deploys the Fast Argument as a clincher to cap off his refutation of Plato's view that the Form of the Good is the chief good: "And one might ask the question, what in the world they mean by 'a thing itself', if in man himself and in a particular man the account of man is one and the same. For in so far as they are men, they will in no respect differ; and if this is so, neither will there be a difference in so far as they are good. But again it will not be good any the more for being eternal, since that which lasts long is no whiter than that which perishes in a day.". I explore this sketchily presented Fast Argument. I consider why Aristotle may think it is valid and why he does not seem to realize that, on readings that make it effective against Plato's view, his Fast Argument also seems to apply to his own view that eudaimonia is the chief good. This is what I will call "Aristotle's Dilemma." If the Fast Argument is interpreted too narrowly, its point about the whiteness of a white thing being independent of its duration will not apply to the goodness of the Form of the Good. If it is interpreted broadly enough to undermine the claim of the Form of the Good to be the chief good, it will equally undermine that claim for eudaimonia. Finally, I discuss some of the things Plato and Aristotle say about the chief good, and comparable things Immanuel Kant says about the good will. I draw some speculative conclusions that focus on the importance for Aristotle of the goodness of the chief good not being at risk. (shrink)
